How did SurfShot Media start?

September 9, 1999 – A small group of San Diego surfers, with only a shred of entrepreneurial experience between them, start a free surf report site in Mission Beach posting photos for members to check the surf. And with that, SurfShot.com was born.

Currently SurfShot.com is one of the TOP FIVE SURF WEBSITES IN THE WORLD, and has expanded its twice-daily surf report to cover the entire San Diego County coastline.

Since its inception, SurfShot has also worked to cultivate an online community of people who love surfing. We encourage our members to upload photos, news, events, or any other surf related content. It’s this idea of shared, user-generated content that really is the beating heart of SurfShot.com. Empowering users as the primary content providers facilitates a user experience that is much more communal and generates one of the world’s largest surf networks.

Though it may be where we got our start, the Web certainly isn’t the only medium in which SurfShot has been successful. On the print side, we publish SurfShot Magazine. What began as a grassroots, San Diego surf magazine in 2003, has expanded to all of California. Each month 15,000 FREE magazines are distributed to surf shops up and down the California coast, bringing the California surfer the best editorial the Golden State has to offer. The unique cross media dynamic between print and website enables SurfShot to reach one of the largest surf-based audiences in the world.
